The Summer Heat Balance of the Oregon Inner Shelf Over 2 Decades: Intraseasonal Variability

چکیده
This study examines the heat balance of inner shelf along US West Coast using 14 years summer temperature and velocity observations in 15 m water depth. Previous work at this site found no year-to-year variability observed mean change despite significant warming due to surface flux variable cooling across-shelf flux. Here, processes that affect coastal temperatures over time scales days months are investigated. Synoptic (on several days) was predominantly flux, as there little synoptic heating evidence an along-shelf would close two-dimensional budget when residual large. The analyses suggest influenced by multiple mechanisms addition Ekman transport winds. For example, a three-layer vertical structure 40% ± 10% during downwelling-favorable winds upwelling circulation 80% time. generally highest near bottom boundaries, where were most limited. positive time, likely resulting from uncertainty observational limitations. An improved understanding control buffer ocean has potential improve predictions under climate scenarios.

Wind-driven inner-shelf circulation off central Oregon during summer
[1] Velocity measurements from 17 deployments of moored acoustic Doppler current profilers obtained during four summer upwelling seasons are used to describe the crossshelf divergence of Ekman transport in the inner shelf off Oregon. For each deployment the measured surface and bottom cross-shelf transports were compared with estimates of the theoretical Ekman transports to find the fraction of...
متن کاملWave-Driven Inner-Shelf Motions on the Oregon Coast*
Recent work by S. Lentz et al. documents offshore transport in the inner shelf due to a wave-driven return flow associated with the Hasselmann wave stress (the Stokes–Coriolis force). This analysis is extended using observations from the central Oregon coast to identify the wave-driven return flow present and quantify the potential bias of wind-driven across-shelf exchange by unresolved wave-dr...
متن کاملIntraseasonal SST Variability and Air–Sea Interaction over the Kuroshio Extension Region during Boreal Summer*
The structure and evolution characteristics of intraseasonal (20–100 day) variations of sea surface temperature (SST) and associated atmospheric and oceanic circulations over the Kuroshio Extension (KE) region during boreal summer are investigated, using satellite-based daily SST, observed precipitation data, and reanalysis data. The intraseasonal SST warming in the KE region is associated with...

متن کاملDecadal change in intraseasonal variability over the South China Sea
[1] Evidence is presented to reveal a decadal change around mid-1990s in the behavior of intraseasonal variability (ISV) over the South China Sea (SCS). During 1979–1993, the ISV has a spectral peak around 64 days, which is longer than in the recent epoch of 1994–2007 (around 42 days). The ISV event in 1979–1993 involves a merging process of the northward and westward propagating convection ano...
